Jonas Thibaut on Set of O CHALE, shot in Ghana in 2022

I am a Berlin and Cologne-based Director of Photography working across fiction, documentary, and music-driven productions. While my main focus lies in narrative and documentary cinematography, I also enjoy bringing my visual approach to music videos and commercial work.

My work blends a documentary sensitivity with bold visual storytelling, shaped by highly composed tripod or dolly shots, aswell as intuitive handheld camerawork, atmospheric lighting, and a strong sense of rhythm and composition. Having traveled extensively and worked across different cultures, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for human experiences in all their diversity — something I strive to reflect in my images.

My films have been recognized at major festivals. O CHALE premiered at the Munich Film Festival, winning the Neues Deutsches Kino Award for Best Acting. My project MEIN NAME AKIM received multiple First Steps Award nominations and will premiere at the Max Ophüls Preis Festival in 2026.
I also work on a long-form documentary right now: my 90-minute feature MISS OLYMPIA is currently in post-production.

In addition, I frequently collaborate with musicians at Teldex Studio Berlin, documenting album recordings of renowned artists such as Kirill Gerstein and Karen Gomyo. These encounters with music continue to shape my visual rhythm and emotional approach to cinematography.

Across all genres, I aim to create images that reveal emotional states, capture the tension between people, and give space a resonant presence. For me, cinematography emerges through a balance of technique, instinct, and trust within the collaboration.
